Northwest Seminar - Vienna University of Business and Economics - Spring 1999
Professor Edward M. Bergman [edward.m.bergman@wu-wien.ac.at]
This semester the comparative focus of the NorthWest seminar will be on questions of regional innovation and industrial modernization. We have the rare opportunity to participate in a distance-learning, internet-based seminar organized by Professor Philip Shapira (Georgia Institute of Technology), who will broadcast some synchronous sessions from Karlsruhe (D) and Atlanta (US).
You will have full-time access to asynchronous materials available on a webserver (http://www.cherry.gatech.edu/mod99/) which should be reviewed immediately. Later versions of the final course materials can be read or downloaded at your home institution during the course of the semester. Professor Shapira's GaTech students will be taking the course at the same time, and we hope to maximize the cooperative and comparative value of interaction between them and you through various small assignments. However, your main assignment for NorthWest will involve a detailed study and report concerning 2 firms of a single industry for which modernization of production methods and practices would benefit your home region. This 20 page text report must be written in English and be based upon interviews, background research, comparative U.S. practice, and relevant theories.
