Mid-sized Cities Profile

A new economic development program for the state of Georgia, called the Georgia Centers of Innovation, has been initiated to develop new economic development capabilities in cities in Georgia. The program is targeted primarily to the four largest metropolitan areas outside of Atlanta: Columbus, Macon, Augusta, and Savannah. (An additional center is being added in Tifton, Georgia.) Information on the program can be found at:

There are 3 assignments associated with this program:

Student Allocations for Assignment 1 & 2 by City

Assignment 1

In support of this program, a consultant has asked you to prepare a professional profile and presentation. You are asked to prepare an orientation, information and data profile which describes the development of your selected locations, demographic, economic and industrial structure, and key developmental assets.

You have flexibility in how you organize this presentation, but you should include the following items:

Web sites, references, photos/images, other information sources.

You will work in teams of 2-3 students. Teams will participate as presenters or reviewers of another team's presentation.
All data and information should be the most recent, up-to-date available.

 Assignment 2

The consultant that reviewed your presentation asked that you modify it to add information to show the talent and idea capabilities of your cities. Please develop a new presentation that incorporates the following:

·         Innovation assets, such as research centers, technology transfer facilities, research parks, technology incubators, innovation promotion programs, information infrastructures, innovation support programs and associations – provide information on size, funding, tenants, sub-programs or other attributes of these assets

·         Knowledge assets including patents, publications, and trademarks by company or individual or industry

·         Occupational employment analysis, e.g., occupational location quotients, changes in occupational employment over time, changes in occupational employment by wage levels, changes in occupational employment by education/experience levels

·         Educational characteristics, key educational institutions, departments and major areas, research facilities

·         “Creativity assets” such as theatres, galleries, parks/sports/recreational facilities

·         Knowledge-based economic development strategies.

All data and information should be the most recent, up-to-date available.

This is a team assignment. You will work in your existing teams.

Presentations will be scheduled as follows:

·         March 29, 2005: Macon and Augusta give presentations (Columbus and Savannah provide review comments)

·         March 31, 2005: Columbus and Savannah give presentations (Macon and Augusta provide review comments)

Assignment 3

This assignment asks you to compare the mid-sized city you profiled in the previous presentations to another mid-sized city of your choice outside of Georgia. A mid-sized city is defined as a metropolitan area with a population of 100,000 to 500,000. Lists of metropolitan areas by population size can be found at http://www.census.gov/population/cen2000/phc-t3/tab03.xls . You are welcome to select cities of comparable size outside the U.S. if you can find good data about them. There is some flexibility to go outside this population boundary with permission of the instructor. This is an individual (not a group) assignment.

Again, you have flexibility on format and approach, but for this deliverable you should include:

The final report should be between 15-20 pages in length.  You can include a data appendix (tables, charts, graphs) of up to an additional 8 pages. Your report should be professionally-produced, using an accepted referencing system.

In addition, you should be prepared to make a 10 minute presentation of the results of your comparison in class and also prepare a formal review of another student's work. Students will be evaluated based on their presentations and participation as reviewers.

SUBMIT COMPARISON CITIES TO ME BY APRIL 5, 2005. THE WRITTEN PART OF THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE NO LATER THAN 5 PM TUESDAY, MAY 3, 2005.

The schedule for presentations and reviews can be accessed here.
